Selecting the right hosting is an essential part when planning your e-learning project. There is two key steps to the decision of hosting choice, firstly whether you do it yourself or have someone else host, and secondly what will the hosting solution consist of.
Do it yourself or not?
There are a number of criteria involved in deciding whether it is better to self-host internally, externally or to go with a specialised hosting company who have experience in the products that you want to use. These include issues such as available skill set, project implementation timelines, budget and culture.
What do you need?
Even when the main decision is made as whether to do it yourself or seek outside hosting, the process of selecting the correct hosting options brings up many more questions. Some of these questions are:
- What features of the LMS are you going to be using and how do they impact on the requirements for space, or capacity of the servers?
- How many and how big are the courses you are going live with and what about in 6 months how many then?
- How many total users will you have on the site initially, 6 months in, 12 months in?
- How many of those user will be doing something at the exact same time – such as a quiz or submitting assignments (user concurrency)?
- What type of integrations do you need to put in place? User Records? Authentication? Reporting?
- What level of access do you need to the site or server to achieve your goals?
- What type of backup processes does your institution require, and what about disaster recovery?
